Bug List - 2A

A list of things that get under my skin.

1.     People that drive slow in the left lane on the freeway.
Why? There are just more cautious drivers and all the construction on I-75 limits the number of drivable lanes.

2.     People that help themselves to your food without asking.
Why? Some people have no boundaries or feel very comfortable and they assume they can just eat anyone’s food.

3.     People that are noisy or try talking to you on public transportation.
Why? Freedom of speech. Some people have more energy and are talkative and friendly with strangers.

4.     When you go to use the restroom and the toilet seat is left up.
Why? When men use the restroom, they typically put up the toilet seat and they will forget that they should be courteous to others and put it back down when they are done.

5.     Getting woken up in the morning by noisy housemates.
Why? People wake up at different times and they can’t wait around for everyone to wake up to do their daily routine or tasks.

6.     People that stare into your car while you are in traffic. Particularly grown men.
Why? Some people just do it subconsciously, other do it on purpose to see if they can attract women/men.

7.     When someone walks into your room and leaves your door open after they walk out.
Why? Depends on the person, some people like family do it just to bug you.

8.     People that borrow your stuff and don't bring it back the same way you lent it to them or just don't bring it back period
Why? People can forget to return things or just not care for taking care of other’s things.

9.     When you are on an afternoon flight and people leave the window open or an evening flight and the lights are on.
Why? People enjoy viewing outside the window and also reading at night so they leave the light on.

10.   When you sit in your car and everything inside is boiling hot.
Why? Living in Florida, it is constantly 80 degrees outside. The heat of the sun turns the whole car into an oven, especially a car with black leather interior.

11.   When I walk outside/inside somewhere and my glasses fog up.
Why? Again, the perks of living in Florida’s humidity. When I go from outside to the A/C, the change in temperature makes the glass condensate.

12.   When I'm sleeping in a hotel and there is light peeking through the curtains.
Why? The tracks on some curtains don’t allow the curtains to close all the way allowing light to enter the room.

13.   When my dog jumps off my bed and then comes back begging me to pick him up again.
Why? My dog, like most dogs, hears a noise, jumps off to go see what it is, realizes its nothing and comes back wanting to get on the bed. My dog is a Maltese and the bed is too high to jump up so I have to pick him up.

14.   When parents/ grandparents assume you are a technology assistant.
Why? Older generations aren’t as tech savvy. When they have an issue with their computer or phone, they hope that since you use these devices every day you know how to fix them.

15.   When my lace clothing tears.
Why? Lace is a very delicate material that, if pulled on too roughly, can tear.

16.   When someone else drives your car and changes the seat, mirrors and steering wheel.
Why? When driving a car, you need to make sure you can see out of the mirrors for safety reasons.

17.   The traffic in my neighborhood is always really bad in the morning and afternoons
Why? I live directly behind an elementary school and 4 blocks away from a middle/high school. During those times, parents are dropping and picking up their children causing an overflow of traffic by my house.

18.   When you have a connecting flight and you aren't let off the plane first and get stuck behind slow passengers taking their time.
Why? People are let off planes in order of seat rows, mainly priority seating. It would be hard for flight attendants to control all passengers of a plane in order for select people to get off first.

19.   Actual physical bugs biting me.
Why? Florida is a very humid state that is home to lots of mosquitos. Mosquitos are insects that live off consuming blood, thus they will bite at any opportunity.

20.   Bathrooms that do not have paper towels, just air dryers.
Why? In efforts to conserve waste and protect the environment, hand dryers were placed instead of paper towels. Even though hand dryers disperse more bacteria than paper.

Reflection: Trying to come up with 20 separate things that bug you is more difficult than you might first think. I found myself writing different things down throughout the week because I couldn’t come up with 20 on the spot. I thought I was more irritable before this assignment, but I guess that is just circumstantial. To help myself think, or better yet remember pet peeves, I thought back to times I was out of my house. I put myself in places that typically can get pretty stressful. Places like grocery stores, department store, airports, trains, cars, anywhere where I typically can get annoyed. This assignment helped me to not just get annoyed but to ask why things happen.

  1. Hey Amanda, great list! I can personally connect with so many of these bugs having grown up in Florida. I hate being bitten by bugs, but I also find the smell of bug spray is also fairly repulsive so there really isn't a winning situation. I also cannot stand having people borrow my things and return them in a lower quality condition. I am a neat person and cant stand having my things get messed up. Hopefully our friends will be more respectful in the future!
