Identifying Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends – 6A

1.   Economic Trends
“UPS expects to hire about 95,000 workers for holiday season”
b.     What leads you to believe an opportunity exists? Well an opportunity exists for people in need of a job. Anyone looking to make more money can take on a seasonal job with UPS.
c.     Prototypical customer: The prototypical customer is actual anyone looking for employment.
d.     Is the opportunity easy or difficult to exploit? And why do you think so? I think this opportunity is easy to exploit, the only difficulty would be applying to the job and going through the interview process.
e.     Why do you see the opportunity? I see the opportunity because UPS is creating 95,000 more jobs. That means 95,000 more people can be employed this holiday season.

2.   Regulatory Changes
“Gun stocks surge on report Trump is preparing to ease rules for overseas sales of US guns”
b.     What leads you to believe an opportunity exists? Well I see the opportunity for sales overseas for small and large gun manufacturers. They will be able to sell small arms to foreigners with less regulations and oversight from the government.
c.     Prototypical customer: Overseas foreigners looking to purchase US guns.
d.     Is the opportunity easy or difficult to exploit? And why do you think so? I think this opportunity is easy to exploit. Like mention in the article, the changes can be made without congressional approval. These changes will happen soon.
e.     Why do you see the opportunity? I see the opportunity because since this news has been shared, shares and stocks of firearm manufacturers have already spiked. Meaning, people are investing in the company in anticipation of large sales.

3.   Economic Trends
“US tipped to put brakes on auto sales as easy finance dries up”
b.     What leads you to believe an opportunity exists? Well as the sales slow in the US, sales are increasing overseas. Meaning, US car manufacturers might decrease prices.
c.     Prototypical customer: Mainly residents in India and Japan, as their sales have increased by 5.7% this year. But also, hopefully US residents in the market for an American car.
d.     Is the opportunity easy or difficult to exploit? And why do you think so? I think the opportunity will be difficult to exploit since there is no guarantee that US manufactures will drop prices. But easy for those living in Japan and India.
e.     Why do you see the opportunity? Well, when the demand for certain products goes down, suppliers lower prices in order to attract more customers. I believe GMC and other American car manufacturers will decrease prices of their products.

4.   Regulatory Changes
“DC Lawmaker Wants To Let People Get Medical Marijuana Without Doctor Approval”
b.     What leads you to believe an opportunity exists? I believe there is an opportunity for medicinal cannabis shops to have more customers. Since there is a possibility that customers will no longer have to get a recommendation from a doctor. Thus, making it easier to access.
c.     Prototypical customer: The prototypical customer would be someone looking for a natural alternative to opioid painkillers.
d.     Is the opportunity easy or difficult to exploit? And why do you think so? I think the opportunity is difficult to exploit. This amendment act would have to be approved by the right people and not all lawmakers have the same positive view of marijuana as a natural healer.

e.     Why do you see the opportunity? I see the opportunity because making marijuana more accessible for patients and allowing them to self-certify as qualifying for medical cannabis, opens a larger audience and customer pool for dispensaries. Patients will have the opportunity to avoid going to the doctor which is costly and time consuming.

Comments

  1. There is definitely a need for more jobs with this industry! Especially during the holidays there are more deliveries to be made. There is still a high percentage of people who are not employed so I think this opportunity is great. Also, as far as car sales overseas it is not common for a U.S. resident in a foreign country to buy an American-made car. It is usually much more expensive, even if the U.S. drops their prices. It’s much cheaper to buy a car from where the country is than any other "foreign" car.

  2. I actually know somebody who works for UPS and he said that it ruins Christmas for him because he has so much work to do during the month of December. So absolutely they need a lot more employees during this time. Honestly, I don't see lawmakers legalizing medical marijuana use without doctor approval, it just seems like it might as well be made recreational at that point. I suppose there would be a minor difference in that dispensaries may not be able to advertise the marijuana or it would be carried differently but it just seems to me that lawmakers would just legalize marijuana recreationally at that point.

  3. The sale of guns is a really interesting topic to mention as a regulatory change. I am a strong believer in keeping tight regulations on gun control between countries. The fact that these changes can be made without congressional consent is crazy to me. This article brings to mind how entrepreneurs have to face moral and ethical dilemmas all the time. In this example, yes, gun dealers would make more money. However, don't we as humans have a moral obligation to keep other humans from harm? Entrepreneurs can create very innovative products but if people can harm others in the process, is it worth it?
