Reading Reflection No. 2 - 21A

"How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big" by Scott Adams
1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The general theme of the book was advice from his own personal life experience. He gives a lot of tips to create your own success. The book focused on human nature, personal and social. Staying positive, embracing failure and moving on. I think he really stresses personal energy and attitude.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
I think one thing that reflects what I’m learning in this course is that one can benefit from knowing and acquiring more skills and thus, have a better chance at success. This is basically improving your own human capital. He also mentions that there is no one fail-proof plan, or one size fits all guide to success. Everyone’s story is different and what works for one person may or may not work for the next.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
Scott Adams recommends increasing your happy thoughts and to make an effort to always think and remember positive things that happen to you. So, the assignment I would do is similar to the Bug List assignment, except the exact opposite. I would make students list 20 things that make them happy and why it made them happy.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

A lot of successful entrepreneurs speak on how they worked hard and how they always put others first. How they always made sure to give back even if that meant they had nothing. Scott Adams prioritizes selfishness and that isn’t very common. If you can’t look after yourself first then you’re really no help to others. I think that is a very true statement and not too often do you hear people say that.  I also enjoyed how he stresses personal energy. A lot of people are millionaires but they don’t have a good attitude and are miserable because they are constantly working. Another thing he mentioned that I now realize is true is that people usually try to become successful off their passions, which can work, but most of the time these things fall through. Success should create passion.

  1. Like the book I read, it also talked about how to create your own success but through social media. I love the idea of a “positive” bug list. I think that assignment would be more enjoyable versus the one that we did. It would be very useful and we would probably realize some items that we truly enjoy but don’t always realize it since sometimes we take things for granted. It’s very interesting how the author focused on selfishness. It seems he was very straightforward with his thoughts which is something you don’t always see.

  2. I agree with the author of your book that it's absolutely important to remain positive and try to put yourself into a positive state of mind and environment whenever possible. Not only is this good for your health but it promotes the flow of ideas that can be beneficial when you're aspiring to create a business. I like your idea of listing things that make you happy, I think I would've been done with that assignment pretty quickly!

  3. Hi! This book sounds so interesting. I want to read it now. Selfishness is so important when running a company. Your dreams and your aspirations should always be at the forefront of your decisions. Positivity is also important in the work environment because it promotes a healthy environment for everyone in the office. Positive thoughts encourage people to think outside the box and creates a safe environment for mistakes.
